Accessing the Online Databases from Home using
an Internet Connection
Access the databases using your Baldwin Library card:
The AOL service prevents direct access to the Library's databases, however you can access databases by first going to the library CATALOG.
Enter your library card barcode number and pin
(Located in the top right-hand corner of the catalog page).
Don't know your barcode number and pin? Contact the Circulation Desk at 248-647-1700.
Select SEARCH DATABASES
(Located on the right side of the page)
Attention Macintosh users: Access our databases using either
Netscape, Mozilla, or Firefox browsers. Database access is not possible
using Safari or Internet Explorer.
Specific Browser Instructions
Netscape/Mozilla
- Select Edit and then Preferences from the menu bar at the top.
- Click on the plus sign (arrow if you are using a Macintosh) next to
advanced on the left side of the Preferences window.
- Click on Proxies.
- Select Automatic Proxy Configuration.
- In the text box next to Configuration Location (URL) type http://66.51.146.36/bpl.pac
- Click the Reload button.
- Click OK.
At this point, when you click on one of the online database links you
will be asked to enter a user name and password. For the user name type library, and for the password type in the barcode
number from your library card (NO SPACES).
Firefox 2.x
- Select Tools and then Options from the menu bar at the top. (Mac OS X: Select Firefox and then Preferences... from the menu bar at the top.)
- Click the Advanced icon at the top of the window.
- Click the Network tab.
- Select Automatic Proxy Configuration.
- In the text box next to Configuration Location (URL) type http://66.51.146.36/bpl.pac
- Click the Reload button.
- Click OK.
At this point, when you click on one of the online database links you
will be asked to enter a user name and password. For the user name type library, and for the password type in the barcode
number from your library card (NO SPACES).
Firefox 1.x
- Select Tools and then Options from the menu bar at the top. (Mac OS X: Select Firefox and then Preferences... from the menu bar at the top.)
- In the General section click Connection Settings.
- Select Automatic Proxy Configuration.
- In the text box next to Configuration Location (URL) type http://66.51.146.36/bpl.pac
- Click the Reload button.
- Click OK.
At this point, when you click on one of the online database links you
will be asked to enter a user name and password. For the user name type library, and for the password type in the barcode
number from your library card (NO SPACES).
Internet Explorer 5 (or higher) Dial-up
- Select Tools and then Internet Options from the menu bar at the top. (Attention, Internet Explorer 7 users - The Tools menu may be located in the upper right corner of your browser window.)
- Click the Connections tab.
- Under Dial-up setting, click the name of your connection.
- Click the settings button.
- Under Automatic Configuration, check "Automatically detect settings"
and "Use automatic configuration script"
- Under Address type: http://66.51.146.36/bpl.pac
- Click OK
- Click Advanced
- Check the boxes (if they exist) "Accept all cookies", "Java console",
"JAVA JIT compiler", and "Java logging"
- Click OK, then Click OK again.
- Close and re-open Internet Explorer
At this point, when you click on one of the online database links you
will be asked to enter a user name and password. For the user name type library, and for the password type in the barcode
number from your library card (NO SPACES).
Internet Explorer 5 (or higher)- Cable or DSL
- Select Tools and then Intenet Options from the menu bar at the top. (Attention, Internet Explorer 7 users - The Tools menu may be located in the upper right corner of your browser window.)
- Click the Connections tab.
- Click LAN Settings
- Check "Automatically detect settings" and "Use automatic
configuration script"
- Under Address type: http://66.51.146.36/bpl.pac
- Click OK, click OK again.
- Close and re-open Internet Explorer
At this point, when you click on one of the online database links you
will be asked to enter a user name and password. For the user name type library, and for the password type in the barcode
number from your library card (NO SPACES).
