Novel Destinations: The Middle East
The traditional definition of the Middle East includes only Bahrain, Cyprus, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. Definitions today often include Afghanistan, Algeria, Libya, Morocco, Pakistan, Sudan, and Tunisia
The Middle East can also be referred to as the Near East, Southwest Asia, or Western Asia (common in India).
The term Middle East was first popularized by Alfred Mahan, a U.S. naval writer, during a discussion about British imperial strategy in the National Review (London) in 1902.
