Summer Reading Program a Big Hit with Local Family

Before one local family heads off for their many summer travels, at the top of the packing list are plenty of books to devour in the car, in an easy chair, or on a rainy day.

Usually the books are recommended titles from the Baldwin Library’s Summer Reading Program.

“Our kids have always enjoyed participating in the program, and I have liked it because it has really encouraged them to read,” says Diane Satullo. “One great motivation is that after they read so many books and complete certain activities they get to pick from a group a book they can keep.”

As a themed event each summer season, the program exposes readers young and old to different authors and encourages them to use the library.

“I remember one checklist activity required the kids to ask a librarian a question or tell them a joke,” says Satullo. “I know it was intended as an icebreaker to get them comfortable in approaching the staff. They now know our whole family by name.

Satullo says she has been impressed with the youth department staff and has always found them to be very helpful.

She remembers how the staff even gave assistance to their junior Girl Scout troop.

“We did a book drive project and needed to do some merit badges related to a library topic. A lot of places won’t help you unless you have a big group. But even with just five girls, they were very accommodating and offered to help develop other programs if we needed assistance.”
