Library Helps Senior Obtain Her Beloved Books Through the Homebound Program

To say that the Baldwin Library will go to great lengths to help patrons obtain their desired books is not an exaggeration.

At 78 years old, Myra Quill was making constant trips to the library after typically reading five books a week. But when a librarian noticed that the familiar fixture, who now uses a walker, was having difficulty with a leg problem due to her years as a professional dancer, Quill was told of a unique alternative.

“The staff kindly offered to let me participate in their Homebound Program and that’s the best thing they could have done,” says Quill. “ I just give the library five or six titles and they send it to me in a green pouch through the mail and then I return it the same way. If the library doesn’t have the title I want, they will often obtain it on loan from another library in the area.”

Quill says she used to only read non-fiction books, but after hearing a friend laughing out loud while reading a novel, she gave fiction a try and is now hooked on reading series written by popular authors.

Believe it or not, when the staff notices that I have not asked for some new books, they have even called and asked if I had enough books to read! It’s just a fabulous program. If I ever came into some big money I would donate to the library,” she says.

A few years ago Quill’s former apartment complex had a fire, and when a fireman would not let her back in, he offered to retrieve some items for her.

“The only things I requested were my jewelry and library books. I just love the Baldwin Library. I love it, I love it, I love it.”
