Through Library Programs a Mother and Daughter Savor a Special Time Together

Umbarger Family
When it comes to finding opportunities for a parent and child to share meaningful experiences in our busy world, some patrons like Kathy Umbarger have discovered that programs at the Baldwin Library more than fit the bill.

Last year Umbarger and her now eleven year old daughter Lauren, joined the Knitting Group at the Baldwin Library which meets on the second and fourth Monday of every month.

“We met a lot of friendly people and it was nice getting together with a diverse group that had different interests,” says Umbarger who has been knitting with Lauren for the past four years. “We actually learned a lot because a few of the knitters showed us some new things to do.”

This year the Umbargers were introduced to the Mother and Daughter Book Club that is available to fourth through sixth grade students. The age appropriate books are read by each person and then followed by a group discussion a few weeks later.  The library also offers a Father and Son Book Club.

We have really enjoyed the book club and I think it has helped Lauren become an avid reader,” says Umbarger who treasures the time spent reading the book together with her daughter, often before bed.

Umbarger appreciates the unique opportunity to spend a special time together with Lauren.

“Participating with Lauren through the library programs is different from the norm where we might chat in the car on the way to a lesson or talk while we’re eating dinner or watching a television show. For us it is special time together that we always look forward to.”
