Novel Destinations: Western Europe
The term Western Europe is usually applied to a geographical area that encompasses Scandinavia, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Monaco, Portugal, Spain, and Italy. Natural boundaries include the Atlantic Ocean on the west, the Arctic Sea on the north, and the Mediterranean Sea on the south. To the east lie the countries of Central Europe. Until the end of Soviet hegemony in Eastern Europe (1989), the term often referred to the non-Communist countries of Europe. ("Western Europe" Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia. Grolier Online, 2011.
