What is Battle of the Books?
Battle of the Books is a program designed to encourage reading. Fourth and fifth grade students form teams with an adult coach, read from a selected list of six books, and then participate in a contest where they will compete with other teams by answering questions based on the books. Battle books will be announced and available for check out on December 13, 2016. Please see Battle Rules for details regarding the actual Battle.
Who May Participate?
All fourth and fifth graders who attend a Birmingham Public School are eligible to participate by organizing teams of 3 to 6 members. Each team must have one adult team coach. It is not necessary for team members to attend the same school or be in the same grade. Students are responsible for forming their own teams.
How Does My Team Register?
Registration closed on February 13, 2017.
Who can be a Coach and what are their responsibilities?
The coach may be a parent or other interested adult who will serve as the contact person between the team and the Baldwin Public Library. Coaches will help the teams stay on track and come up with strategies for Battle preparation. All coaches must attend the Coaches Meeting at the Baldwin Public Library on Monday, January 9 at 7 p.m. Coaches are also responsible for arranging transportation for their team to and from Seaholm High School on the day of Battle.
